What is visual hierarchy?

As a simple, visual hierarchy is the arrangement of information on a page display. This arrangement influences how the user views the page.

Good visual hierarchy, increase usability.

How can visual hierarchy influence increase usability?

Visual hierarchy can increase usability by guiding users’ attention to the most important elements first and ensuring that the content is easy to understand.

  • Directs Attention: By using size, contrast, and spacing, you can highlight key elements (like buttons or headlines), ensuring users know where to focus first.
  • Improves Scanning: Most users scan pages rather than read every detail. A well-organized visual hierarchy allows users to find information faster, increasing efficiency.
  • Enhances Readability: Organizing text and images in a logical flow helps users comprehend information without effort, making it easier to follow instructions or take action.
  • Creates Flow: By establishing a clear path from one piece of content to the next, visual hierarchy helps users navigate through the interface smoothly.

So, if visual hierarchy is good, user will easily read and understand the information, but if visual hierarchy is bad, user will struggle to read and understand the information.

How to make a good Visual Hierarchy?

  • Create a list of all information and elements on a page.
  • Prioritize information and elements, starting from the most important to least important.
  • Make most important information and elements stand out, either by using bright colors or larger sizes.
  • Make less important information and elements less noticeable.

Visual hierarchy in UI design is very important because it affects the overall user experience of the website or app being used.
